Habit of Mind 4

Understanding diversity of interpretations through analysis of context, point of view, and frame of reference

Reflection

In the A.P. World History course, we developed the ability to understand a diversity of interpretations through the analysis of context, point of view, and frame reference. Everyone has their own opinions thus creating different mindset to different opinions. Many historians interpret a piece of information differently based on the fact that they have different views. A historian from China won’t have the same opinions to a European historian, and so on. From what I’ve learned in the past, I learned that the pilgrims in the Americas had a nice peaceful Thanksgiving on Plymouth Rock with the Native Americans and now that I’m older I now know the hard truth that none of that existed. The Pilgrims took and force the Native Americans to give up their land and food to the Europeans. As a student, in class we would read documents dealing with points of views from two different cultures and societies. For me, I found it difficult to find what the tone of a reading was. But to improve, I took time to actually think about what the author was writing about and analyze how he felt towards whatever he was writing about. When we had to read from different points of views from capitalists and communists, you can tell by reading that they both thought that they were better than the other. Capitalists had a whole different mind set which focused on freedom and communists had the government control everything. Even when I say it in my point of view, I disregard the good points of communism.

Evidence

The evidence I chose to support my reflection is my Mongol Expansion DBQ. It discusses the reactions from different societies to the barbaric invasions the Mongols conducted to conquer and establish the first largest empire across the Eurasia landmass.
