Habit of Mind 1

Constructing and evaluating arguments: using evidence to make plausible arguments.

Reflection

From taking A.P. World History as a class this year, I learned how to construct and evaluate arguments by using evidence like documents, pictures, and any other historical sources. We, as a class, learned how to analyze a set of documents based on their tone, point of view, and what the speaker or picture is trying to state. This habit of mind is used all around in A.P. World history, in DBQ essays and when you try to prove your point based on a document. DBQ essay prompts can vary from comparing two impacts of a crisis on a specific society, to just analyzing the reaction of a society to a crisis or invasion. But one thing that’s common among all DBQ essays are that they  are accompanied with a set of documents. For me, I thought that this would be one of the more easier essays, and it was, because all the information is given to you. All I had to do was read the documents, interpret them and break down each document’s information to write in the essay. Using the documents as evidence, I was able to prove what I was writing in my essay and to support an argument addressed in the prompt. The steps I took to develop this habit was change the way I read documents and not take everything so literal. At the beginning of the year, I would read this documents and actually write what was in the documents. Mr. Rodriguez told us in class, to not literally take things from what was written in the documents, because the reader already has that information. Instead we had to interpret them in order to support our argument. This habit of mind overall can be used and applied in other subjects other than A.P. World History.

Evidence

The piece of evidence I have provided to display habit of mind one is my analysis of a document from my Mongol Expansion DBQ essay. It displays how I analyze and interpret the documents in order to provide evidence and support my essay.
